The pharmaceutical industry in Bangladesh is one of the most developed hi-tech sectors within the country's economy. After the promulgation of Drug Control Ordinance - 1982, the development of this sector was accelerated. The professional knowledge, thoughts and innovative ideas of the pharmaceutical professionals working in this sector are the key factors for these developments. Due to recent development of this sector, the industry is exporting medicines to global markets, including the European market. This sector is also providing 97% of the total medicine requirement of the local market. With the entry of several reputed multi-national pharmaceutical companies in the Bangladesh market, along with the existing local companies providing interested professions with career options that are lucrative & prestigious.
The Department of Pharmacy (NUB) began its journey on the 4th January 2004. Over the few years, it has made great strides in quality pharmacy education, providing unique learning opportunities for students and meeting the challenge of industry demands. The Department offers 4-years bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) program and has been accredited by the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh (PCB). To be graduate in this field one has to complete 160 credit hours. The program has been designed to produce qualified pharmacist who will be academically sound, technically skilled, and professionally capable of and morally committed to meet the growing demand of pharmaceutical fields. The Department boasts faculty expertise in pharmacy discipline and is positioned well in the country in pharmacy education.
Entry Requirements
The students must pass HSC, A-Level or recognized equivalents with the following science subjects: Physics, Chemistry & Biology. A student must secure at least two ‘B’ grades in the above mentioned subjects to qualify for admission or ‘O’ Level in five subjects and ‘A’ Level in two majors with minimum ‘C’ grade in each or US high school diploma.
Vision
The objectives of the Bachelor of Pharmacy Program are :
1. To provide students with the knowledge and understanding of essentials facts, concepts, principles and theories relating to the design and manufacture of medicines;
2. To produce a pharmacist having skills and ability equivalent to International Standards;
3. To inspire respnsible , compassionate leadership in the profession;
4. To practice according to the internationally accepted professional code of ethics which will include the ability to:
i) compound and dispense medicine including sterile preparations.
ii) evaluate drugs to determine and maintain their quality.
iii) participate in the health teams by giving advice in all maters relating to drugs.
iv) communicate effectively with patients and other health professionals;
v) safe handling of potentially hazardous materials;
vi) gain knowledge of the law and ethical concerns relating to the supply of medicines;
vii) analyze medicines.
