ELL is an academic discipline that includes the study of literature written in the English language including literatures from the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Including in the program is the study of basic English linguistics (including English phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, corpus linguistics, and stylistics), and English sociolinguistics (including discourse analysis of written and spoken texts in the English language, the history of the English language, English language learning and teaching, and the study of the English Language of the World).
The Department of English offers a 4-year bachelor degree on ‘Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Language and Literature (ELL). To become a graduate in this field one has to complete 132 credits.The degree is meant for the students who wish to acquire skills in reading and writing and have a solid grounding in Anglo-American literature for secondary or post-secondary teaching or to develop analytical and expressive skills valuable in many professional careers.
Entry Requirements
Minimum 2nd division or GPA 2.5 in both SSC and HSC or equivalent examinations or ‘O’ Level in five subjects and ‘A’ Level in two majors with minimum ‘C’ grade in each or US high school diploma.
Vision
As an academic program of NUB, the primary objective of this program is to provide university-level education for students as one of the essential elements of their professional development. The English program is designed to foster the general intellectual development through university education and the particular skills and insights derived from the study of literary culture and language.
At all levels of instruction, the courses offered by the department have three basic objectives: to develop clarity, precision, and maturity in spoken and written communication; to focus attention on the importance of cultural and social values in understanding the forces that have shaped civilization and that are shaping the contemporary world; to develop a flexible intellectual capacity centered around thinking skills and problem-solving abilities that can be applied to a wide range of professional responsibilities where individuals must take action in the face of concrete human problems.
